RPNAO Leadership/Clinical Practice Fellowship Initiative

Since November 2005, the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO) has administered the Leadership/Clinical Practice Fellowship Program. A total of 18 RPNs have participated in the program which is funded by Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC).

The opportunity offers RPNs the opportunity to undertake a fully funded mentor-based internship within their workplace. The program is the first of its kind for RPNs and requires selected applicants to develop, with a mentor, a learning plan and budget to address an identified gap within the workplace. The nurse will then dedicate 400 hours (full time) to their fellowship and can be currently working either part time or full time. Some suggested themes include:

  • RPN focused work contributing to healthy workplaces
  • Prevention and management of chronic diseases, such as diabetes
  • Contributing to the development of Ontario’s eHealth strategy - how your organization is using eHealth and how staff is participating
  • Mental health issues and addictions services
  • Implementation of RNAO Best Practice Guidelines
  • Interprofessional Care/Teams
